  • Appointments

    Academic Staff Appointments
    Academic staff are professional and administrative employees with duties and types of appointments that are primarily associated with higher education and its administration. Academic staff are salaried personnel, employed by the WSU School of Medicine (SOM).

    Full-Time Affiliate
    Full-Time-Affiliate (FTA) faculty assist in the mission of educating medical students and supporting the University's missions of teaching, scholarship, and service. FTA faculty are employed by a WSU affiliate (Ascension Health System, Beaumont Hospital-Dearborn, Detroit Medical Center, Henry Ford Health System and John D. Dingell VA Medical Center). 

    Full-Time Equivalent
    Wayne State University School of Medicine's Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) faculty members are nationally recognized researchers and clinicians who provide a rich learning environment for medical students, residents, fellows and graduate students. FTE faculty are salaried personnel, employed by the WSUSOM.

    Voluntary Appointments
    Voluntary Faculty members are not employed by WSUSOM.  Like FTA faculty, they are an invaluable asset in the School's mission of educating WSU medical students, trainees, and graduate students and supporting the University's substantial service requirements.

  • FTE & FTA tracks

    Clinician Educator (CE) – faculty on this track are expected to have scholarship, teaching and service.  Scholarship in the broadest sense is required on this track and may include, but is not limited to research. Many, but not all, also provide clinical care.  (CE faculty  are not eligible for tenure).

    Clinical Scholar (CS) – faculty members who focus on scholarly work and also provide teaching, service, and clinical care.  As a general guideline, scholarly activity should be at least 40% of their total effort.  (Payroll faculty on this track may be eligible for tenure).

    Research (R) – faculty members whose only obligation is research, without requirement for teaching and service. (Faculty on this track are not eligible for tenure)

    Research Educator (RE) – faculty members whose major effort (at least 50%) is participation in research and who also provide education, service and, if appropriate, clinical care. (Payroll faculty on this track may be eligible to receive tenure)

  • Voluntary titles

    Clinical – Faculty members who are licensed clinicians are appointed as clinical instructors or assistant professors.  Clinical faculty are typically employed by an affiliate or engaged in private practice.  Clinical faculty support the teaching and service missions of WSUSOM. 

    Adjunct – Faculty members who are research scientists and employed by affiliates, other academic institutions or industry may be appointed as an adjunct assistant professor.  Adjunct faculty support the teaching scholarship and/or service commitments of WSUSOM.
