Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) Appointments (including WSU Hiring Process)
Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine’s Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) faculty members are nationally-recognized researchers and clinicians who provide a rich learning environment for medical students, residents, fellows, and graduate students. FTE faculty are salaried personnel, employed by the WSU School of Medicine (SOM).
Full-Time-Affiliate (FTA) faculty assist in the mission of educating medical students and supporting the University’s basic missions of teaching, scholarship, and service. FTA faculty are individuals who are employed by a WSU affiliate (Henry Ford Health System, St. John's Hospital and Medical Center, Beaumont Hospital-Dearborn, John D. Dingell VA Medical Center). FTA appointments are for specific periods of time, but service in these classifications does not count toward continuing tenure in the University. FTA faculty are not eligible for inclusion in the University retirement plan or in life insurance, health insurance, or disability programs. They are not represented by the AAUP-AFT, but are subject to the same policies and practices, including representation on some SOM committees and for the purposes of the P&T process. The same standards for appointment and promotion apply to the FTE and the FTA faculty.
Voluntary Faculty members are not employed by the WSU SOM. Like FTA faculty, they are an invaluable asset in the School’s mission of educating WSU medical students, trainees, and graduate students and supporting the University’s substantial teaching and service requirements. These are appointments which provide an opportunity for the University to utilize professional talent of the local community. Voluntary faculty members who provide patient care are appointed as Clinical Assistant, Clinical Associate, or Clinical Professor. Prior to completion of Board requirements, Clinical voluntary faculty appointments are made at the rank of Instructor. Once documentation of board certification is provided to the OFA, the faculty member can request a change in rank to Clinical Assistant Professor. Non-clinicians with a terminal degree are appointed as Adjunct Assistant, Adjunct Associate, or Adjunct Professor.
